WhoLock makes sense because of Moffat. SuperWho makes sense because of the Fantasy. SuperWhoLock is a buttload of shit on the surface. Moffat runs 2/3. Mark Sheppard was in 2/3. SuperWho has hot young things, but the original Who and Sherlock have hot old things. So what is it that makes all three series’ appeal such similar fandoms?

These television series have redefined the greater good.

It is no longer the preservation of humanity through martyrdom or the choice between a higher and lower society, nor is it the choice between Mary-Jane and the school bus full of children, but rather, through choosing Mary-Jane—choosing Amy Pond, Sam Winchester, and, most recently, John Watson—humanity in its essence—in essence, not in its quantities, but in its qualities—is saved. These choices reveal the worth of life, not as numbers on a graph, but as keepers of somebody else’s heart.

We’ve all heard it before.

From Rory’s “She is to me!” to Dean’s, “Sammy? Sammy? It’s okay, I’m here. I’m not going to leave you” and Sherlock’s suicide phone call to John Watson. These protagonists have chosen their wives, their brothers, and their best friends over the needs of the universe time and time again.

And this makes heroes so much more accessible.

We are not heroes through the number of people we save, but through whom we save. We do not find adventure through the exploration of galaxies and other life forms, but through the things we share with our most beloved. And we cannot save anybody except those who would care to be saved by us. In the end, Sherlock, the Doctor, and the Winchesters have all lost their credibility in their respective fields, but each does not seem to regard it as a certain loss, because their credibility remains intact with their family.
